Medical Suffixes

A suffix is the term at the end of the word. It is the last part of the word.  It may be attached to a root or prefix. Medical suffixes can alter or modify the meaning of the word.

Let’s look at the word RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty means plastic surgery of the nose.

Rhin(o) means nose

-plasty means surgical repair

If we change the suffix –plasty to –rrhea, we made the word rhinorrhea.

Rhinorrhea means nasal discharge

Rhin(o) means nose

-rrhea means a flowing, a flux
